Mount Garibaldi: hazard potential from a long-dormant volcanic system in the Pacific Northwest

چکیده

Mount Garibaldi Volcanic System (MGVS) is the southernmost member of Belt (GVB), northern (Canadian) segment Cascade Arc. Temporally episodic explosive to effusive eruptions may be associated with peak ice unloading after glacial maxima. Rapid and widespread deglaciation overlying sheet, rebound, have altered physical characteristics landscape whilst system thought been in long repose for over 10 000 years. Over last 60 years, region has become heavily populated due increased tourism all-season recreation opportunities. MGVS poses greatest volcanic threat human population built infrastructure between Vancouver resort municipality Whistler. We believe that this a priority further scientific research, given its already “very high” overall score would likely increase if there was better understanding eruptive history hazards. Using published field evidence, we show potential hazards, related environment system, settlement Squamish include voluminous lava flows, pyroclastic density currents triggered by dome collapse, tephra fallout, debris lahars. As relatively few exposures dated using modern geochronological techniques, take opportunity (re)calibrate radiocarbon ages recent GVB.

A lava flow simulation model for the development of volcanic hazard maps for Mount Etna (Italy)

Volcanic hazard assessment is of paramount importance for the safeguard of the resources exposed to volcanic hazards. In the paper we present ELFM, a lava flow simulation model for the evaluation of the lava flow hazard on Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy), the most important active volcano in Europe. The major contributions of the paper are: (a) a detailed specification of the lava flow simulation mo...

Long-term volcanic hazard assessment on El Hierro (Canary Islands)

Long-term hazard assessment, one of the bastions of risk-mitigation programs, is required for land-use planning and for developing emergency plans. To ensure quality and representative results, long-term volcanic hazard assessment requires several sequential steps to be completed, which include the compilation of geological and volcanological information, the characterisation of past eruptions,...

Petrogenesis of volcanic rocks from Razei region in Northwest Ardabil, Iran

The Razei region in the northwest of Ardabil is considered a part of West Alborz-Azerbaijan. Rocks in this area were created by Eocene volcanic activities. These rocks range from andesite to olivine basalt. The common texture of these rocks is Porphyritic with microlithic matrix. The phenocrysts of these rocks are often clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and olivine. The texture is made of microlithic...

Identification of Beijerinckia from Pacific Northwest soils.

The genus Beijerinckia Derx has been described as being limited to the tropical regions and rare or nonexistent in temperate zones (M. Alexander, Introduction to Microbiology, 1961). Other workers (J. Dobereiner and A. P. Ruschel, Soil Biol. Intern. News Bull. 1:3, 1964) have expressed surprise that Beijerinckia has not been reported as found in soils in such large areas as the southern United ...
